History of Saraland
Saraland was incorporated in 1957 and was a Spanish land grant to Don Diego Alvarez in the early 1800’s. Former names of the city include Alvarez Station, Cleveland Station and eventually Saraland after Sara DeWitt, who was the wife of C.J. DeWitt. Mr. DeWitt opened the city’s first post office in 1895 on the Southern Railroad and was able to name the area Saraland after his beloved wife.
Saraland was sparsely populated in the first part of the 20th century until a population boom occurred when an influx of industrial activity began happening in neighboring Mobile. The Northward expansion of Mobile in 1940s and 1950s brought about the creation of Saraland in 1957. At this time, there were only 125 people living in Saraland. By 1960, the population had grown to 4,595 and by 1980 Saraland had grown to 9,844 people. Today over 13,700 people call Saraland home.
